BFT Access Control Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If you have a BFT gate opener and the access control system attached to it has stopped reading keypads, cards, or phone commands, we can usually get it replaced the same week, often the same day, at an installed price of $380 to $950 depending on which BFT model you have and whether we’re replacing just the receiver board or the full keypad, antenna, and harness. Most Austin owners discover the problem one morning when the keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move, or a card that worked on Tuesday does nothing on Wednesday. You need someone who knows BFT wiring, BFT frequencies, and BFT’s habit of changing connector styles between series, which is exactly what we do.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has shipped a lot of different access control hardware over the years, and the connectors are not interchangeable across all of them. The older RIGEL 4 and RIGEL 5 keypad models use a six-wire loom with screw terminals, while the newer MITTO and PERSEO lines moved to plug-in harnesses with different pin spacing. If you have a CLONIX receiver board inside a swing or slide operator, the radio frequency matters: BFT built 433.92 MHz units for most of the US market, but some European-market units running 868 MHz ended up in Texas installations and they will not talk to US-spec remotes or keypads. The model label is usually on the back of the keypad housing or silk-screened on the receiver board itself. BFT stopped producing some of the RIGEL-series parts, so when a genuinely dead original board shows up, we recommend a quality aftermarket receiver matched to your operator’s voltage rather than hunting for old stock. Warden Gate Repair Austin is an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT, but we have installed and repaired enough of their equipment that we know which substitutions work and which ones cause a service call two weeks later.

Key takeaways: know your series (RIGEL, MITTO, PERSEO, CLONIX), confirm the frequency, and don’t assume a new keypad will plug into an old harness without checking the connector.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up, gate doesn’t move. This is usually the output relay on the receiver board wearing out, not the keypad itself. The keypad still sends the code, but the relay that tells the gate motor to run no longer closes.
  • Cards or fobs read intermittently. BFT card readers rely on a small antenna loop; when the antenna wire develops a break or corrosion at the connector, reads get flaky, especially in humid Austin weather.
  • Works from one side of the gate, not the other. That points to the wiring run between the two posts, or a second keypad that has lost its RS-485 or Wiegand connection, not necessarily the main board.
  • You hear a click but the gate hesitates. A weak relay signal can cause the operator to delay before starting. It works eventually, but the lag gets worse as the relay degrades.
  • The system forgets a card or code once a month. Memory corruption on the board, often heat-related. Austin summers bake the electronics inside gate posts, and BFT boards are not immune.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For most BFT access control replacements in Austin, you are looking at $380 to $950 installed. A straightforward keypad swap on a RIGEL or MITTO system, where the wiring and antenna are still good, lands around $380 to $550. If we are replacing the receiver board, keypad, antenna, and re-running a corroded wire run, expect $650 to $950. Every quote includes the part, labor, wire connectors, weather sealing, and programming all existing remotes and cards back into the system so you don’t have to re-enroll everything yourself. We write the price down before we start, and it doesn’t change unless we find something dangerous that we stop and show you first. The work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, the return visit is free.

DIY or Call Us?

Access control wiring is low voltage, so the electrical risk is small. The real danger is in the gate itself: a BFT operator that has been miswired or is getting a flaky signal can start moving when nobody expects it, which is a serious hazard for children and pets. We don’t recommend opening a BFT operator housing unless you have isolated the motor from power and understand the force settings. What you can safely do is check the keypad for cracked plastic or moisture inside the lens, confirm the antenna wire hasn’t been pulled out of its connector, and note exactly which cards or codes still work. Beyond that, call us at (361) 268-6253. As our lead technician, Cole Rafferty, puts it: “Tell me exactly what it’s doing and I’ll tell you exactly what it costs.”
