DoorKing Access Control Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide

DoorKing access control installation in Austin typically runs $425 to $1,150 installed, depending on whether we’re mounting a new keypad, card reader, or full telephone entry system. We stock DoorKing-compatible access control components on our trucks, and in most Austin neighborhoods we can have the part matched and installed within one to two business days. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: the keypad stops accepting codes, the card reader flashes but won’t release the gate, or a visitor calls saying the call box just rings and rings. Cole Rafferty’s rule on this one is simple: tell me exactly what it’s doing and I’ll tell you exactly what it costs. We’re an independent Austin service provider, not affiliated with DoorKing, but we install and service their access control line every week.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing access control spans three main lines: the 1812 series telephone entry and card reader systems, the 1830/1834/1835/1838 multi-tenant entry panels, and the 6000-series standalone keypads often paired with 9150 or 6100 gate operators. If you’re in Austin and not sure which one you have, open the cabinet or the outer housing and look for the silver label on the board itself, not the housing. That label carries the actual model number plus a date code, and it’s the only reliable identifier, because housings get swapped more often than people realize. Here’s the compatibility gotcha: a DoorKing 1812 keypad is not the same as a 1834 keypad, even though they look nearly identical at a glance. The 1812 uses a membrane keypad with an onboard controller, while the 1834 runs through the main entry board, and installing the wrong one will leave you with a dead keypad and a service call that could have been avoided. When an original DoorKing part is weeks out, we carry quality aftermarket equivalents for the most common DoorKing keypads, card readers, and RF receivers; those run about 20 to 35 percent less than OEM and carry the same workmanship warranty from us. For boards and main controllers, we stick with OEM, because aftermarket boards in DoorKing systems have a failure pattern we won’t put our name on.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts a code but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the access control is fine and the output relay or the connection to the gate operator has failed. We test the relay with a meter before blaming the keypad, and about half the time the keypad is reusable.
  • Some codes work, some don’t, or codes erase themselves. On DoorKing 1830-series boards, this points to the onboard memory or the backup battery. The battery is a simple swap; the board memory is not. Austin heat shortens that little onboard battery’s life to about two or three years.
  • Call box rings a phone but no audio comes through. That’s a phone line or VoIP interface issue, and Austin’s shift to fiber and VoIP over copper phone lines has made this one of the most common DoorKing service calls we see. It’s usually a programming or wiring fix, not a full part replacement.
  • Card reader beeps but won’t grant access. Often the reader is working and the card itself has gone bad, or the reader’s wiring to the board has a broken conductor. Swap the card first, then test the reader; it’s a sequential diagnosis that saves money.
  • The display is unreadable or the keypad letters are worn off. Membrane keypads take a beating in central Texas sun. Once the overlay is cracked or faded beyond reading, replacement is the only real fix, and it’s one of the lowest-cost DoorKing parts we install.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Installed DoorKing access control work in Austin breaks down like this:

  • Single keypad or card reader replacement: $425 to $650 installed, including the part, wiring checks, programming, and testing.
  • Full 1812 or 1830-series entry board replacement: $725 to $1,150 installed, including the board, backup battery, and reprogramming of existing codes and directory entries.
  • Telephone entry to VoIP conversion: $350 to $550 on top of the board or keypad work, depending on the existing wiring.

Every one of those numbers is written down before we start, and the price you see is the price you pay. No surprise line items after the fact. Every DoorKing access control installation we do in Austin carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails in the first year, the return visit and the fix are free. That’s in writing, and if you want to know exactly what it covers before you ever pick up the phone, we’ll walk you through it line by line.

DIY or Call Us?

What an Austin owner can safely check on a DoorKing access control system: the circuit breaker feeding the gate operator, the backup battery terminals for corrosion, and whether the keypad overlay is cracked or swollen. Those three checks tell you a lot and cost nothing. What goes wrong when DIY goes beyond that: DoorKing boards run on low voltage, but they sit next to 120V and 240V wiring inside the same cabinet, and a wrong probe placement against a live terminal can destroy the board you were trying to save or hurt you. We’ve also seen owners fix the wrong part entirely, because a DoorKing system shares symptoms across components. If you’ve already checked the simple things and it’s still misbehaving, call (361) 268-6253 and describe what it’s doing. That call is free, and it’ll save you more than a parts order would.
