Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Elite keypad and intercom repair in Austin typically runs $165 to $380 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a membrane keypad, a full housing, or the intercom board itself. We stock Elite-compatible keypads, intercom modules, and wiring harnesses on the trucks, so most Austin repairs are done the same day we arrive. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: the gate works fine from inside the house, but the keypad at the street stops recognizing codes, or the intercom speaker goes quiet mid-call.

Here’s the part nobody warns you about until it happens: Elite keypads and intercoms sit in direct sun most of the day in Austin. The membrane layers that give those buttons their “click” dry out and crack. The plastic housing fades and warps. And when the seal around the faceplate finally lets go, the circuit board gets fried by our humidity and heat. What looks like a simple dead keypad is often water intrusion plus electrical failure.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

We repair Elite keypads and intercoms across the full residential and light commercial range, including Elite SL-3000, SL-5100, and SL-3000V swing gate operators, plus the Elite Mirage and Classic series. Before you call, open the keypad housing and look for the part number label on the printed circuit board itself, not the outside plate. Elite stamps their compatibles on a white sticker inside. The part number usually starts with “KP” for keypads and “IC” for intercom boards. Photograph that label and have it ready when you call. It saves us a return trip and saves you money.

One compatibility gotcha that trips up Austin owners: Elite’s older keypads use a 12-volt DC supply, but their newer SL-5100 line switched to 24-volt DC. You cannot swap a used keypad from one system to the other without a voltage converter. We carry both versions and test incoming voltage before installing anything. As for OEM versus aftermarket: we always recommend Elite OEM keypads for the SL series because the aftermarket equivalents have thinner membrane layers that fail faster in central Texas heat. For older discontinued models where OEM is no longer made, we stock a specific aftermarket line that has held up well on Austin gates. Here’s how to think about it: if your Elite part number is still manufactured, OEM is worth the extra $40 to $60. If it’s discontinued, our aftermarket option has a decent track record.

We’re an independent repair company, not affiliated with Elite. But we service enough of their operators in the Austin metro that we can usually identify your exact part just from a photo and the model number off the side of the motor housing.

Signs Your Elite Keypad or Intercom Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts your code but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad’s relay is clicking, but the signal isn’t reaching the operator board. This usually means a failed relay output or a broken wire between the keypad and the operator. The keypad may test fine on its own, but the connection has failed.
  • Buttons work sometimes, especially after rain or cold fronts. Moisture is getting inside the keypad housing and bridging the contacts intermittently. Once the board wet-fails enough times, it corrodes and stops working permanently.
  • Intercom speaker buzzes or drops out mid-call. The intercom board’s audio amplifier is degrading, or the speaker cone has cracked from years of sun exposure. In Austin we see a lot of this on west-facing keypad posts.
  • You have to press buttons hard or multiple times to register on devices. The membrane contact layer inside the keypad has hardened. This is the classic first symptom of a failing Elite keypad. It only gets worse.
  • Keypad display is blank or showing partial characters. The LCD or LED driver has failed, or the ribbon cable inside has come loose from thermal cycling. Either way, you’re likely looking at a full keypad replacement, not a wiring fix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we charge in Austin, written plain. A standard Elite keypad swap runs $165 to $230 installed. If we’re replacing an intercom board or speaker module, plan on $250 to $380. The difference comes down to the part: an OEM Elite SL-series keypad is pricier than a discontinued model that we match with aftermarket. Labor runs about $85 for a straightforward swap, and that’s included in those figures.

Every quote includes the part, labor, removal of the old unit, and wiring cleanup. We write the price down before any work starts. No surprises after the fact. The work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the keypad or intercom fails within a year, the second visit is free, including any replacement part we installed.

Here’s the cost breakdown:

  • Elite OEM keypad (common SL series): $110 – $150 part, $50 – $70 labor
  • Aftermarket equivalent for discontinued models: $70 – $95 part, $50 – $70 labor
  • Intercom board repair or replacement: $180 – $280 part, $70 – $100 labor
  • Speaker or microphone replacement: $60 – $95 part, $50 – $70 labor

The membrane keypad is the most common replacement, and it’s usually under $250 all-in. Call (361) 268-6253 with your model number and we’ll give you a firm range before we ever roll out.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check two things yourself: whether the keypad has power going to it (look for a lit display or a faint beep when you press buttons) and whether the wiring at the operator board looks visibly intact. That’s it. Anything inside the keypad or intercom housing involves low-voltage wiring that’s easy to short, and you can kill the operator board with one reversed lead. We’ve replaced more operator boards in Austin because a well-meaning homeowner tried to swap a keypad than we have from lightning strikes.

If you’re seeing any of the symptoms above, call us at (361) 268-6253. We’ll tell you what the part costs, what the labor costs, and when we can be there. Written price before we touch anything.
