Get your free estimateGhost Controls Access Control Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
Ghost Controls access control installation in Austin typically runs $340 – $620 for a complete keypad, receiver, and wiring install on an existing gate opener. We stock Ghost Controls-compatible access control parts on the truck and can usually get you running the same day you call. Most Austin homeowners discover the problem when the keypad stops beeping, the receiver quits responding to remotes, or the gate opens fine from inside but won’t budge from the street.
Tell me exactly what it’s doing and I’ll tell you exactly what it costs. That’s how Cole Rafferty opens every access control call, and it saves you a trip charge on a part you might not even need.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls builds its access control systems around two core lines: the AX series (the entry-level workhorse on residential swing gates) and the higher-capacity R series, which shows up on longer driveways and light commercial gates in Austin. The access control components we install include the keypad (model AXKP or RKP, depending on the series), wireless receiver, vehicle exit wand, and the control board inside the opener itself.
The compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Austin owners: Ghost Controls changed the keypad connector style after the AX series revision in 2019. If you have an AX opener manufactured before that, you need the older 3-pin keypad, not the newer 4-pin plug. You can find the manufacture date on the white label inside the opener cover, next to the model number. We check that before we ever quote a part so you’re not paying for a return shipment.
For Ghost Controls specifically, we recommend OEM parts on anything that talks to the control board. Aftermarket keypads exist and they’re cheaper, but we’ve seen too many fail inside two Austin summers because the housing isn’t UV-stabilized. OEM Ghost Controls keypads handle the July heat and the occasional February freeze without the buttons turning brittle.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is transmitting, but the receiver on the control board isn’t recognizing the signal. This usually points to a failed receiver module or a corrupted board memory, not the keypad itself.
- You get one beep instead of two when entering the code. Ghost Controls keypads use a two-beep confirmation on a successful signal. One beep means the keypad registered the button press but couldn’t complete the transmission, which is a dying keypad battery or corroded battery contacts.
- Remotes work, but the keypad stopped working entirely. This is the clearest sign the keypad itself has failed rather than the opener. The remotes run on a separate frequency, so if they still open the gate, your access control keypad board is done.
- The gate opens randomly without anyone pressing a button. A failing receiver can pick up stray signals from nearby garage doors or municipal radio traffic. We see this in dense Austin neighborhoods where houses sit close together and everyone has an automatic gate.
- Water inside the keypad housing. Austin’s occasional torrential downpours find every weak gasket. If you see condensation behind the keypad face, the internal board is already corroding even if it still works today.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Ghost Controls access control installation costs in Austin, broken out so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
| Service | Austin Price Range |
|---|---|
| Keypad replacement (OEM Ghost Controls, installed) | $180 – $310 |
| Receiver module replacement (installed) | $220 – $350 |
| Full access control kit (keypad + receiver + wiring, installed) | $340 – $620 |
| Service call / diagnostic (applied to repair if you proceed) | $89 waived with repair |
The range comes down to wire condition. If your existing low-voltage wire is intact and the last installer didn’t bury it directly under a gravel driveway, the job is fast and lands at the low end. If the wire is chewed through or weathered from Austin’s clay soil shifting, we run new wire and the labor creeps up. Every quote is written down and agreed before work starts. No surprise line items at the end, ever.
Every access control installation we do carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the part fails or the install isn’t right within a year, the return visit is free.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Open the keypad cover and look at the battery. On most Ghost Controls keypads it’s a standard 9-volt, and if it’s swollen or leaking, that’s almost certainly your problem. You can also check that the opener’s antenna wire isn’t pulled loose or resting against the steel post.
What you shouldn’t do is open the main control board housing and start swapping receiver modules. Ghost Controls boards run live low-voltage power to the receiver even when the opener is off, and a short across the wrong pins turns a $220 receiver into a $480 board replacement. If the simple checks don’t fix it, call us at (361) 268-6253 and we’ll bring the right part the first time.
FAQs
In Austin’s climate, an OEM Ghost Controls keypad typically lasts 4 to 6 years before either the UV exposure or the summer humidity takes it out. Aftermarket keypads often fail in half that time because the plastic isn’t stabilized for Texas sun.
Sometimes, if the failure is just corroded battery contacts or a cracked wire connector, we can repair it on the spot. But if the circuit board itself is damaged, replacement is cheaper than board-level repair. Call (361) 268-6253 and describe what it’s doing, and we’ll know which path makes sense before we ever send a tech.
A straightforward keypad replacement takes under an hour. A full kit with new wiring can take 2 to 3 hours depending on the wire run distance from the house to the gate.
Yes. We carry OEM Ghost Controls keypads, receivers, and connectors for the AX and R series as standard truck stock, along with LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing parts for mixed installs. If your gate opener is a brand outside that list, we’ll tell you before booking.
