Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair in Austin typically runs $185 – $390 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad itself, the intercom module, or the control board feeding both. We stock Ghost Controls-compatible keypads and intercom wiring kits on the truck, so most repair calls are same-day in the Austin metro. The way owners usually find us: the keypad works sometimes, then not at all, or the intercom buzzes but no voice comes through. One morning the gate just sits there while you’re punching the code for the third time. That’s the symptom picture. The board’s still getting power, but the input signal from the keypad or intercom has gone intermittent, and Ghost Controls boards don’t like intermittent.
We’re an independent gate repair company in Austin, not a Ghost Controls authorized dealer. But we work on Ghost Controls hardware every week, and we carry the parts that actually fail in this climate. Cole Rafferty is our owner and lead technician. He’s been running gate and access work in Austin for years, including a long stretch of commercial swing gate installs and repairs out near the Domain, and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells every customer: tell me exactly what it’s doing and I’ll tell you exactly what it costs.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
If your gate opener says Ghost Controls on the cover, chances are this page applies to you. The keypad and intercom family breaks down into a few lines: the AXDP and AXDP2 keypads, the WKP wireless keypad series, and the wired intercom stations paired with Ghost Controls control boards like the AXV or DTP series. The keypad you need depends on your board revision. Older Ghost Controls boards, the ones installed before roughly 2018, use a 4-wire keypad connection. Newer boards and keypads shifted to a simplified 2-wire data link. That’s the compatibility gotcha: a 2-wire keypad on a 4-wire board will light up and beep, but it won’t open the gate. You can check the board label inside the opener cover, the wire count at the keypad pigtail, or snap a photo and text it to us before we roll out.
The OEM-versus-aftermarket question on Ghost Controls is straightforward. Ghost Controls builds a solid keypad, but the OEM units in Austin heat fail at the membrane key switches first. The sun here bakes the plastic overlay until the numbers stop registering. A quality aftermarket keypad with a metal face or a UV-sealed overlay will outlast the OEM part by two or three summers. We stock both. We’ll show you the price difference and let you choose. The one place we won’t compromise is the board-side connection; using the correct wire-count keypad for your board revision matters more than the brand stamped on the front.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- You type the code and nothing happens, or it takes three tries. The membrane switches under the keypad face have worn through or the contacts have oxidized. Ghost Controls keypads wear at the “1” and “9” keys first because those get the most presses.
- The keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is talking to the board, but the board isn’t getting the signal it expects. That’s usually a wire-count mismatch or a failing data wire at a splice point, and it’s a common one after a DIY install or a gate post shift.
- The intercom rings the house unit, but the voice is garbled or gone. This is almost always the intercom cable itself. Austin’s heat cycles plus the vibration of the gate flex the cable at the hinge point until the shielding breaks down. The intercom still rings because the ring wire is intact, but the audio pair has gone.
- The keypad works at night and fails in the afternoon. That’s thermal expansion. The board or the keypad’s internal connections expand in the Austin heat and lose contact. It’s a classic sign the keypad is on its way out, not a programming issue.
- You have to press the buttons harder and harder. The silicone membrane under the keypad buttons has compressed or torn. This is the earliest warning sign, and it’s the cheapest time to swap the keypad before it fails completely on a day you’re running late.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Repair Type | Austin Installed Price Range |
|---|---|
| Keypad replacement (standard Ghost Controls-compatible) | $185 – $280 |
| Keypad replacement (metal-face or UV-sealed upgrade) | $240 – $340 |
| Intercom module replacement, wired | $210 – $310 |
| Keypad + intercom together | $320 – $390 |
| Diagnostic call (applied toward repair if approved) | $75 – $125 |
The range comes down to three things: which board revision you have, whether we’re running new wire or reusing existing, and whether the keypad face needs a mounting ring or spacer. Every price includes the part, the labor, the wiring work, programming the new unit to your existing codes, and testing the full open/close cycle. You get the written price before any work starts. Not a range, not an estimate with a shrug. A number, written down, agreed to, then we work.
The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the keypad or intercom fails within a year of the repair, the return visit is free. We fix it. That’s the whole promise.

AfterHow is Ghost Controls keypad wiring different, and why does it matter in Austin specifically?
Ghost Controls keypads use a low-voltage data wire, which means they’re sensitive to moisture intrusion and UV degradation at the wire entry point. In Austin, where we get long stretches of 95+ degree heat followed by sudden heavy rain, the seal around the keypad’s backbox fails faster than it does in drier, cooler climates. Water creeps into the wire entry, corrodes the terminals, and the keypad starts ghosting inputs. We see this all over central Austin, from the Hyde Park bungalows with 15-year-old gate systems to newer builds out near Westlake and Round Rock. Many of those systems were installed without a drip loop, which means water runs straight down the wire and into the backbox. A proper Austin install should always have a drip loop, and we add one if it’s missing.
The other Austin reality is the sun. The membrane keypads that Ghost Controls ships as original equipment, the AXDP and WKP series, the ones with the flat plastic face, degrade fast in direct south and west Texas exposure. Covering the keypad with a small shade hood or mounting it on a shaded gate post face adds years to its life. We can advise on placement when we’re there.
DIY or Call Us?
The safe diagnostic steps are simple, and you can do them before we arrive. Walk up to the keypad and press each number once. Listen for the beep. If some keys beep and others don’t, the keypad membrane is failing and it’s a parts swap, not a programming fix. If the keypad beeps on every key but the gate doesn’t move, trip the manual release and try the keypad again with the gate disengaged. That tells you whether the problem is the opener or the keypad input. If the intercom rings but the audio is bad, check the wire run at the gate hinge point for any visible fraying or kinks. That tells us a lot before we ever pull into your driveway.
What you should not do is open the Ghost Controls board cover and start probing. The board carries live 120V AC at the input side, and while the keypad itself runs on low voltage, a slip inside the opener housing is the difference between a $250 keypad repair and a hospital visit. We’re not being dramatic. We’ve seen the after-effects of DIY board work. Call us at (361) 268-6253 and describe what the keypad is doing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a keypad, a wire, or a board, and what it’ll likely cost before we ever schedule the truck.
FAQs
In Austin’s sun and heat, an OEM Ghost Controls membrane keypad lasts three to five years before the numbers start getting soft or failing. A metal-face or UV-sealed aftermarket keypad can run seven to ten. The intercom station often outlives the keypad because it’s usually mounted in more shade. Call (361) 268-6253 for an exact quote, and we’ll tell you which keypad your board needs.
No, and we won’t pretend otherwise. A keypad with dead keys has a failed membrane, and the membrane is not a replaceable part on Ghost Controls units. You’re buying a new keypad. Our install includes programming the new unit to your existing codes, so the only thing that changes is the keypad itself. Call (361) 268-6253 and we’ll get it swapped same-day.
Most Ghost Controls keypad or intercom replacements take 45 to 90 minutes from arrival to tested and done. If we’re running new wire, which is sometimes needed on Austin gates with degraded cable at the hinge, add about an hour. We quote the time and price before we start. Call (361) 268-6253 to schedule a free estimate.
Yes. We carry Ghost Controls-compatible keypads, both membrane and metal-face, plus intercom modules and the common wire harnesses, on every Austin service call. We also stock compatible parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing systems, which matters when a property has mixed brands on different gates. Call (361) 268-6253 and tell us your model; we’ll confirm the part is on the truck before we dispatch.
